Introduction - St Helens The Gardens

St Helens - The Gardens

St Helens was previously called Georges Bay. The first white settlers occupied land at the mouth of the George's River. In 1830 the first official land grant of 564 acres was made to Edward Butler a solicitor from Hobart. William Talbot of "Malahide" Fingal acquired 640 acres. The Treloggen family later acquired both of these properties. When tin was discovered nearby in 1874 the area changed rapidly. The Blue Tier mountain plateau to the north west of Georges Bay, soon became dotted with tin mines. Among the new arrivals were Edwin and Lucy Bailey, and Lucy's two brothers Edwin and Fred Nicholson. Edwin's brother Frederick and sisters, Alice and Lyle also settled at Georges Bay.
